Building Wire Is Rated by the Installation Method Not the Cable Label

building wire, THHN ampacity derating, NEC 110.14 terminal temperature, conduit fill, IEC 60364-5-52 installation methods

A building wire carries the current its insulation permits only until it reaches a terminal. That distinction drives most ampacity errors on site. Buy 12 AWG THHN marked 90 °C expecting 30 A and NEC 110.14(C) pulls the answer back to the termination: the 90 °C column may be used for derating arithmetic, but not as the final limit. Circuits up to 100 A default to the 60 °C column — 20 A for 12 AWG — unless the equipment is listed for 75 °C, as most modern breakers are, which gives 25 A. The cable can run hotter than its terminal, so the terminal is the weak link. Three derating layers follow. First, grouping. A single cable in free air sheds heat easily; four current-carrying conductors in a conduit cannot, so NEC Table 310.15(C)(1) applies 80 per cent for 4–6 conductors, 70 per cent for 7–9, 50 per cent for 10–20. Neutral conductors carrying harmonic current count; a lighting neutral with three-harmonic from LED drivers is a current-carrying conductor, not a bystander. Second, ambient temperature. Table columns assume 30 °C; wiring above a drop ceiling in a hot climate reaches 40 °C and needs its own correction factor. Third, conduit fill beyond heat: Chapter 9 Table 1 allows 40 per cent cross-sectional area for more than two conductors, and exceeding it is a mechanical install failure — conductors deformed during pull lose insulation integrity before any ampacity calculation matters. The IEC system covers the same physics differently. IEC 60364-5-52 publishes ten reference installation methods — A1 and A2 insulated in conduit in an insulated wall, B1 and B2 in conduit on a wall or in trunking, C clipped direct, D in free air, E on tray, F buried, G embedded, HX other — and correction factors for grouping and ambient follow from the chosen method, not the cable type. A cable sized against the wrong reference method will be wrong in exactly the way that does not announce itself during installation. Voltage class completes the choice: building wire is commonly 450/750 V or 300/500 V flexible cord, with 600/1000 V reserved for runs sharing infrastructure with power distribution. Specify building wire by naming the installation method on the schedule. The cable label is only one input.
