Insulation is the component that decides a power cable's electrical service life, and its feature list is fixed by physics before any material is chosen. Six measurable properties describe what insulation must deliver — and each has a test that proves it. Dielectric capability under real geometry. Withstand ratings are proven at production length by spark testing and routine high-voltage application, but service life hides in geometry: wall thickness follows the design phase-to-earth voltage, and the thinnest point must still reach 90 per cent of nominal. Voids and particles trapped inside become partial-discharge sites, which is why extruded-insulation classes from 3.6/6 kV upward add a 10 pC routine limit — a defect criterion no thermoplastic wire is asked to meet. Thermal class with a short-circuit promise. PVC caps at 70 °C continuous; XLPE and EPR reach 90 °C, and both must survive 250 °C for five seconds on a fault per IEC 60724-1 without deforming. Since insulation life roughly halves for every 8–10 °C of sustained excess heat, thermal class is the quietest long-term contract the material signs. Mechanical integrity through ageing. IEC 60811 measures tensile strength and elongation at break before and after air-oven ageing; cross-linked compounds additionally prove hot-set resistance — a 0.2 MPa load at 200 °C with recovery, separating thermoset from dressed-up thermoplastic. Moisture resistance. Volume resistivity, water absorption and, for XLPE in wet ground, tree-retardant formulation answer the mechanism that ends most buried circuits: water treeing. Environmental endurance. UV and ozone resistance for exposed runs, with 720-hour xenon-arc ageing behind solar-side ratings, plus compatibility with the sheath's fire behaviour — halogen-free fillers change insulation chemistry, not just the jacket. A cable is specified when all six features are named with their tests. A datasheet that lists only the material is half a specification.
