Tamil Nadu Power Development Corporation Ltd. (TNPDCL) plans to lay underground power cables along the car streets of Sri Mariamman Temple in Samayapuram.

A number of religious processions take place along the four car streets of the temple, which attracts a large number of devotees from different parts of the State. The electric poles have a large number of connections. Many of the connections are commercial. Whenever a religious procession is taken out along the four car streets of the temple, TNPDCL has to suspend the power supply as a precautionary measure. To avoid this and considering the safety of the devotees, the TNPDCL has proposed to lay underground electricity cable.

According to sources, a proposal had been prepared for the project estimated at ₹2 crore. As per the project, underground electricity cable would be laid for 500 metres around the temple. As soon as the project received administrative sanction, steps would be taken to float tenders. It had been decided to complete the work within six months. Once the underground power lines were laid, all connections to consumers would be routed through them.
