Shopping Mall Power Cables Are Specified by Load Behaviour and Evacuation Rules

A shopping mall draws from one supply yet carries the most mixed load families in commercial building, inside a structure whose occupants cannot leave quickly. Its cables are therefore specified on two axes: what the connected equipment demands electrically, and what fire engineering demands physically. The electrical axis is the load mix. Central plant — chillers, pumps, air handling units — runs continuous and is sized by ordinary ampacity after diversity. Escalators and moving walks add repetitive starts with high inrush, so their feeders are checked for thermal cycling and voltage drop, not peak demand alone. Tenant circuits are dominated by LED drivers and switch-mode supplies whose third-harmonic currents add in the neutral instead of cancelling: the reason retail risers often require a neutral equal to or above the phase size, and why reduced-neutral 3+1 construction suits balanced motor banks but not lighting floors. Food courts bring cooking loads with high demand factors; parking structures add EV charging — concentrated non-linear load that shifts both protection settings and distribution-board capacity. The physical axis is evacuation. Long sales floors make voltage drop the binding constraint: final circuits within the 3 per cent lighting and 5 per cent general limits of IEC 60364-5-52 and BS 7671, because a thermally adequate cable can still fail the arithmetic over a hundred-metre run. Life-safety circuits — alarm, emergency lighting, smoke extraction, sprinkler boost — must keep conducting while fire burns past them, proven by IEC 60331-class integrity tests and declared function classes such as DIN 4102-12 E30 to E90. Every cable in a public route carries an EN 50575 Euroclass declaration with a smoke sub-class of s1 or better, and shaft and compartment penetrations are fire-stopped as part of the cable system, not after it. A mall cable schedule survives review only when every circuit answers both questions: how its load behaves, and how its building evacuates.
