Overhead Power Cables Move from Bare Wire to Insulated Systems by Calculated Trade

Overhead power cables now span a spectrum the utility buyer must position a route along: bare stranded conductor, partially insulated distribution wire, and the fully insulated self-supporting bundle. Each step removes one failure mode and adds one cost, and the correct choice follows from which failures the corridor actually suffers. Bare conductor is the cheapest ampacity per tonne of metal: IEEE 738 heat balance works in the conductor's favour because bare strands radiate and convect freely, and wind cools the run. Its failure list is written by the environment — tree contact in forested corridors, wildlife bridging phases, salt and pollution flashover on insulators, conductor-whipping faults in storms, and ignition risk when a live strand falls. Partial insulation — typically protecting the phase cores while leaving the messenger neutral bare — removes phase-to-tree and most animal-contact faults at modest cost and is the common retrofit on problem rural feeders. Fully insulated aerial bundled cable wraps every core in cross-linked polyethylene and twists the phases onto a load-bearing neutral: no insulators to flash over, no exposed strand to fall live, service drops tapped without cutting the line. The trade is physical. An insulation layer adds thermal resistance around each core, so at the same conductor temperature limit, insulated overhead cable carries less current than the bare section that could run in the same breeze — ampacity tables for ABC must be read against bare-conductor ratings, not copied from them. The bundle presents larger wind surface, raising tower and clamp loads, and its phase-to-phase capacitance over long runs differs from open spacing. Specify the system by walking the corridor: vegetation encroachment rate, wildlife incidents, pollution zone, storm history, and future loading. Where the outage ledger is written by trees and birds, insulation pays for itself; where it is written by load growth, bare conductor still wins the arithmetic.
