LSZH Cable Is Defined by Three Test Reports Rather Than One Standard
LSZH cable, low smoke zero halogen cable, IEC 60754 halogen free test, IEC 61034 smoke density, halogen free cable
Low smoke zero halogen describes a material behaviour, not a product standard. The abbreviation certifies nothing; the evidence is three test families and, inside the European Union, one reaction-to-fire classification. Zero halogen has a chemistry method. IEC 60754-1 burns a polymer sample in a tube furnace, absorbs the evolved gases and titrates halogen acid content excluding hydrofluoric acid; a widely applied ceiling for LSZH classification is 5 mg of acid gas per gram of material. IEC 60754-2 attacks the consequence instead: the absorption liquid from the burning test must measure pH no lower than 4.3 and conductivity no higher than 10 µS per mm, proving the fumes are not corrosive. That second limit is what protects switchgear and electronics from conductive acidic deposits. Low smoke has an optical method. IEC 61034 burns a cable sample in a 3 m³ chamber and measures lamp light crossing the smoke; a minimum transmittance near 60 per cent separates low-smoke compounds from dense black PVC plumes that erase escape-route lighting. The compound behind both behaviours replaces PVC's chlorine chemistry with inert metal hydroxides — aluminium trihydrate decomposing near 200 °C, magnesium hydroxide higher — which absorb heat and release water vapour, leaving an oxide barrier. The physics sets the trade: filler loadings often pass half the compound weight, lowering mechanical margin and raising moisture sensitivity, so wet and buried applications need sheath compounds designed for them, not generic grade. For EU construction works, EN 50575 Euroclass converts the same behaviour into declared sub-classes: s1a to s3 for smoke, a1 to a3 for acidity, d0 to d2 for droplets. Two specification traps close the list. First, LSZH is not circuit integrity — fire survival is mica-based and tested separately. Second, ask for the three test reports as a set; any one of them, alone, can carry the label while failing the application it was bought for.
