A Cable Supplier Is Proven by Test Records Rather Than Catalogue Claims
Every cable supplier publishes the same numbers: IEC 60228 conductors, IEC 60502 construction, full compliance. The figures cost nothing to print, which is why professional buyers do not read catalogues — they read documents that only a real manufacturer can produce. Start with the type test report, not the certificate. A genuine report names a testing body, cites the standard and clause, states the sample's construction details, and carries dates. A supplier who cannot show the full report behind a TÜV or certification mark has, at minimum, a gap in quality records — and certificates can be checked against the issuing body's public register by number. For cables in EU construction works, ask for the Declaration of Performance and Euroclass under EN 50575; the DoP exists in a public database, and its absence is not a paperwork detail but a regulatory finding. Then request lot-level routine test records: conductor resistance measured per IEC 60228 tables, high-voltage spark or dielectric testing at production length, and outer-sheath spark tests. Traceability should run from copper rod batch to drum number. A supplier whose routine data is signed weekly rather than per drum is averaging, not testing. The physical checks belong on site. Weigh a drum against the calculated copper mass — aluminium-clad copper sold as copper shows first as underweight and then as resistance above the Class 2 limit. Measure insulation wall thickness at three clock positions against standard nominal values; consistent thin walls and poor eccentricity predict early field failures regardless of what the label claims. For cross-linked product, request the hot-set elongation record: thermoplastic insulation disguised as XLPE flows instead of recovering. Finally, audit the line, not the showroom: curing tube or cathode-vacancy cross-linking control, extruder count for triple-extruded MV screens, and a partial-discharge test set that is actually switched on. Documents that can be independently verified are the only honest specification a cable supplier sells.
