Low Voltage Cable: How to Specify Core Configuration, Neutral Size and CPR Fire Class
A low voltage cable — rated 0.6/1 kV and built to IEC 60502-1 — is where most of a project's cable length is bought, and where most specification errors are made. The mistakes rarely involve current rating. They involve three configuration decisions that belong to this voltage class alone. Cores. Three-phase feeders use four cores, or single cores laid in trefoil. Above roughly 95 mm², multi-core construction becomes heavy and bending radius suffers, so large LV circuits are increasingly built from single cores banded in a triangle — which cancels most of the magnetic field that a multi-core cable contains internally. Neutral and protective earth. These sizes are calculations, not defaults. A balanced three-phase circuit carrying linear loads can use a reduced neutral — the familiar 3+1 core construction. But third-harmonic currents from LED drivers, computers and VSDs add in the neutral instead of cancelling, and where harmonic content is high, IEC 60364-5-52 requires the neutral to equal or exceed the phase conductor. The protective earth follows the thermal rule in IEC 60364-5-54 clause 543.1.2: full size to 16 mm², 16 mm² between 16 and 35 mm², and half the phase size above 35 mm². Armour and fire class. A single AC core inside steel wire armour forms a short-circuited magnetic loop: the armour heats. Aluminium wire armour solves it — which is why trefoil single-core circuits are armoured in aluminium, not steel. For any permanently installed cable in EU construction works, the Construction Products Regulation has required CE marking, a Declaration of Performance and an EN 50575 Euroclass since July 2017: from Aca down to Fca, with sub-classes for smoke (s1a–s3), acidity (a1–a3) and droplets (d0–d2). Each member state's rules set the minimum class for each use — Eca is the floor, escape routes and high-rise demand more. Specify cores for the current path, neutral for the actual load spectrum, armour for the magnetic consequence, and Euroclass for the building's code. The catalogue page comes last.
