Aerial Cable Converts the Bare Overhead Line Into an Insulated Self-Supporting Bundle

Aerial bundled cable — ABC — is the low-voltage overhead line rebuilt as one insulated composite. Three or four cross-linked insulated aluminium phase cores are stranded helically around a load-bearing neutral messenger, and this single self-supporting bundle replaces the older assembly of bare conductors on insulators. The governing documents are the French NF C 33-209 specification, widely called up in African and Middle Eastern tenders, and IEC 60502-1 with conductor data to IEC 61089; China's equivalent is GB/T 12527. The neutral carries the engineering load in both senses. Usually all-aluminium alloy or steel-cored, typically sized near 54.6 mm² for distribution spans, it bears the whole tensile force of the line while the insulated phases carry current only. Consequences: no insulators, no cross-arms per core, and span lengths of roughly 40 to 60 metres instead of the longer sections bare lines tolerate. Insulation is polyethylene rated 70 °C or XLPE rated 90 °C, chosen by expected load and climate. Safety changes are the reason utilities switch. With phases insulated and bundled, contact hazard from trees, birds, kites and inadvertent touch drops sharply, phase-to-phase flashover along a contaminated surface effectively disappears, and service can be extended from insulated taps without cutting the line. In storm and wildfire seasons, that insulation changes outage statistics, not just protection settings. Design follows classical catenary arithmetic: for ordinary spans, sag approximates the weight per metre times span squared over eight times the horizontal tension, recalculated for temperature expansion plus wind and ice loading. Because the bundle's diameter presents more surface than a single bare conductor, wind load rises — the messenger size and clamp spacing must absorb it. Installation hardware completes the system: tensioning wheels that respect the bend limit, clamps at intermediate poles, and insulation-piercing connectors that bite through the jacket to the phase core without stripping. Order the cable, the fittings and the sag chart from one mechanical calculation; ABC fails at hardware, not at copper.
